Here’s a report on the 19th TAS program.
Today we visited the Ellisbrdige Municipal school no.12 at Fatehpura. On the ground floor of this school building, “Umang school for Impaired hearing and partial mute children” is located.
Since we gave lecture program to Blind students we wanted to reach Deaf & Mute students too. We got chance today and knew how difficult to teach such physically challenged students.
As usual, we were accorded a warm welcome by the students from 3rd to 9th standard and the authorities excitedly awaiting the program.
The poster display was set up for the students to explore the mysteries of the solar system at their own pace. And we watched them peruse the information and discuss the same with their friends. One of the teacher, Mr. Kirit Sonara took charge of explaining students in sign language. He really started well.
The program started with Lunar observation. They were particularly amazed to know that small bubble like holes are called ‘craters’ and are nearly 30 to 50 km big. Since students were only 27 in number, we also pointed telescope to Venus. Neither students nor the staff & parents were ready to believe that Venus can be seen in ‘Half Phase’. During the interactive session that followed, Mr Kirit Sonara helped explained each slide in best possible way.
Nearly all the slides fascinated them all. Another wonderful thing that gave us tremendous satisfaction is that the teachers and parents too got into the spirit of things and participated wholeheartedly in the question – answer sessions that interspersed the presentation! Since, the subject was not familiar to them, instead of taking their test, we distributed Moon photos to every child. Both, the teachers and students, were especially keen to have us come again to give them a deeper understanding. We promised to come again to take up teachers’ and interested parents’ training program.
